This reminds me of a book I read when I was in high school, it was called the Mistress of Dragons. In one part of the book, one of the girls peered into a glass and saw a dragon on the way to meet the ruler of the area they were in. The Mistress told the girl to watch until the eye of the dragon filled the glass and that's just so eerily close to the image I had in mind.
